Questions:
1. Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them. How would your character act once someone got to know them?
A young girl, who has been hidden away from the world, Rapunzel is the embodiment of the Sundrop flower. She radiates warmth to those around her with a cheerful curiosity and enthusiasm for life. Rapunzel is unafraid to dream and is willing to face any obstacle in the pursuit of those dreams. Those meeting her for the first time will certainly notice her determination, warmth, and seemingly boundless energy and positivity.
Over time, however, they might begin to notice her insecurities and tendency to question herself and her decisions at times. Worrying about whether what she's doing is right, or if there is something more that she could and should be doing to help others. The depths of her compassion for others, but the worry of wanting everything to be perfect, happy, and well bright. This is a side of her though that generally she won't show until she's extremely close to someone, always preferring to put on a smile. Once she's close with someone and feels truly comfortable with them, she doesn't mind letting them see glimpses of this. However, even with those closest to her, she will still often hide the worst of her insecurities and confusion.
2. What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Rapunzel's most unique trait, which many people notice first, is her seventy feet of golden blonde hair that often trails behind her. Not only is it unusually long, but this golden hair is also imbued with the magic of the Sundrop Flower. When an incantation is sung, it glows and exhibits healing abilities that can even reverse time. In addition to her extraordinary hair, Rapunzel enjoys exploring the world barefoot. She loves the feeling of grass beneath her feet and the sensation of dirt as she walks, allowing her to connect freely with her surroundings.
Initially, Mother Gothel kept Rapunzel barefoot to exert control over her, believing that not allowing her to wear shoes would deter her from leaving the tower. Gothel thought that without shoes, traveling outside would be difficult and hazardous due to a lack of protection. However, after escaping her confinement, Rapunzel chose to continue going barefoot. This decision symbolizes her newfound freedom and connection to the world, as she feels comfortable and unburdened without shoes.
Moreover, Rapunzel is very artistic. She enjoys painting and decorating her surroundings, often expressing herself through vibrant artwork or drawing on brick walls with chalk.
3. What does your character think their flaws are? What do they think their strengths are? What are their actual flaws and strengths?
Rapunzel strives to be cheerful and energetic. She never hesitates to show her wonder and curiosity about the world. Feeling a sense of responsibility for the happiness of others, she believes that through her actions, she can bring joy to their lives by helping them realize their dreams. To Rapunzel, her endless optimism and cheerful demeanor are the greatest gifts she can offer her friends. By remaining upbeat and avoiding feelings of sadness or worry, she aims to help them lead happier and more fulfilling lives. Her perceived strength lies in her hope and constant encouragement.
Despite her efforts to always maintain a positive outlook, Rapunzel acknowledges that she isn't perfect. There are times when her impulsive decisions are not the right choices, and she often questions whether she made the best decision. This leads her to regret what she feels are missed opportunities or moments when she let her loved ones down.
These regrets stem from her genuine desire to be perfect and to meet the expectations others have of her. She yearns to be the perfect daughter, princess, and friend. Rapunzel's entire world has been built around keeping Mother Gothel happy, so her emotions are closely tied to how her mother feels about her decisions. This has led to Rapunzel internalizing a sense of responsibility for Gothel's happiness, often at the expense of her own desires. As a result, she values harmony and prioritizes the happiness of others, sometimes to the point of self-sacrifice. This tendency is evident in how she downplays her ideas when others express doubt or hesitation. Her self-sacrificial nature has fostered insecurity, making it difficult for her to express her wants and needs until she reaches a breaking point. She often mumbles and fidgets with her hair when trying to communicate something that might upset the person she is talking to.
As a result, Rapunzel's internal expectations have built up to the point where she feels compelled to help and involve herself in every problem that arises around her. This drives her to become intrusively helpful, often stepping into situations where she likely should not intervene. In her quest to make things right and perfect, she sometimes oversteps her bounds, inadvertently making matters worse without fully understanding why.
It is her warmth and compassion for others that makes and defines Rapunzel. Her belief in not only her dreams but the dreams of others around her gives Rapunzel the confidence and strength that she continues to display. Giving her the ability to adapt and thrive through all the challenges and struggles that arise. The light inside of her illuminates the darkness and guides others like the lanterns that she had always dreamed of seeing as a child. Her determination to fulfill her dreams drives her to be brave no matter how tangled or messy a situation she might find herself in.
4. What is a common misconception other characters have about your character?
One of the most common misconceptions about Rapunzel is her ability to take care of herself. When people meet or see her, they often perceive her cheerful personality and small stature as signs of fragility. Many believe she would struggle to cope with the harsh realities of the world, thinking she could easily be scared or tricked into giving up, or that she needs protection from others. Although they acknowledge her eagerness and energy, they frequently overlook the extent of her determination once she sets her mind to something. Additionally, many are surprised to learn that she is proficient with a frying pan for self-defense, which further demonstrates her capability to fend for herself.
Character Abilities:
Artistry: Rapunzel is highly creative and has an aptitude for several different hobbies and crafts. Her most notable talent is painting, but she is also shown to be skilled in sewing, paper mache, and other artistic endeavors. Cooking: Rapunzel is shown to be a very good baker and cook, having plenty of time to master it while she was in the tower. Magic Hair: Rapunzel has magical, glowing hair, that doesn't get tangled and seems to be nearly unbreakable. Though it can be cut. Healing Incantation: Channeling the power of the Sundrop Flower, Rapunzel was able to use her hair to heal both minor and fatal wounds and reverse aging to a certain degree. The subject to be healed must have had physical contact with her hair for the incantation to work when sung; Rapunzel's hair emitted a glowing yellow light when the incantation was activated.
